16 House Democrats who were susceptible traveled to the White House 134 times while Biden was in office.
More than a dozen House Democrats locked in tough re-election battles this year have traveled to the White House more than 130 times collectively throughout the past three and a half years for various events.
The 16 Democratic lawmakers made a combined 133 visits to the White House on different occasions, with President Biden present for roughly 75% of the meetings during each visit. These vulnerable Democrats seeking re-election are all from seats currently ranked as either “Democrat Toss Up” or “Lean Democrat” by the Cook Political Report, a nonpartisan election analyst.
Rep. Mary Peltola of Alaska, despite having expressed opposition to parts of the Biden administration’s agenda in recent months, has visited the White House roughly a dozen times since joining Congress in September 2022. Peltola previously praised Biden’s “mental acuity” but declined to comment on his fitness for office when asked recently, stating, “My opinion is irrelevant.”
Another notable Democrat, Rep. Angie Craig of Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District, has made several trips to the White House and called for Biden to “step aside for the next generation of leadership” in the 2024 race for the White House. Craig’s comments came in light of Biden’s performance at the debate and as she seeks re-election.
Rep. Jared Golden of Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, who attended a White House event with President Biden last December, has also distanced himself from the President in recent weeks. Golden expressed his belief that Trump will win the upcoming election and stated his acceptance of that outcome.
Rep. Susan Wild of Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District, a top pick-up opportunity for Republicans in the next election cycle, has shared concerns about Biden’s electability at the top of the ticket, acknowledging the importance of this election. Wild, like many of her colleagues, has attended multiple meetings and events with Biden at the White House since 2021.
As the debate around Biden’s electability continues, other vulnerable Democrats such as Rep. Don Davis and Rep. Jahana Hayes have also raised concerns or remained silent on the matter. The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has criticized Hayes for not directly addressing Biden’s fitness for office.
Following Biden’s lackluster debate performance against Trump, there have been increasing calls for him to step aside from the 2024 presidential election. This situation has caused a rift within the Democratic Party and has led to discussions about Biden’s ability to lead against Trump, the presumptive GOP nominee.
Despite the internal party tensions, Biden and his campaign aides have maintained that he is the right person to lead the Democratic Party against Trump. As the party prepares for the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Chicago, the divide between Biden loyalists and elected officials in swing districts continues to deepen.
