Activists criticize ‘Squad’ incumbent in Westchester over photo controversy with Israel.
Rep. Jamaal Bowman, a part of the left-wing “Squad” in Congress, finds himself embroiled in controversy over his stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict. The situation escalated following scathing press coverage that highlighted the opposition of local Jewish leaders to his re-election campaign.
A recent article by Jewish Insider titled “No More Bridges to Burn in Westchester” focused on the challenges faced by Bowman in Westchester County, where he represents a district with a significant Jewish population. The county, located just outside of New York City, is home to many Jewish residents who have expressed reservations about supporting Bowman in the upcoming election.
Bowman, a former junior high school principal, is facing a tough political battle against a more moderate Democrat, Westchester County Executive George Latimer. The congressman’s criticism of Israel has not only alienated some Jewish leaders but also led to a loss of support from fellow progressives.
According to the Jewish Insider piece, Bowman reportedly asked a local Westchester Jewish leader for photos of them together in an attempt to showcase his relationship with the Jewish community. The request was made in connection with his campaign efforts, but it ultimately raised concerns among some Jewish constituents.
One Jewish leader mentioned in the article revealed that Bowman had initially pledged support for a House bill related to former President Trump’s Abraham Accords Mideast peace deal during an event they both attended. However, Bowman later withdrew his backing for the legislation, leading to discomfort among the Jewish community.
Rez, a refugee from the Soviet Union who faced antisemitism, condemned Bowman’s actions, stating, “Jamaal Bowman has consistently made clear in his statements and actions his animus toward Israel and the Jewish people.” Rez criticized Bowman for his hostility towards individuals based on their faith and ethnic background.
Despite these allegations, Bowman has not responded to the claims made by the Jewish Insider piece. Other Jewish leaders, like Rabbi Evan Hoffman, have publicly voiced their support for Latimer, citing concerns over Bowman’s stance on Israel and the Jewish community.
Bowman’s opposition to Israel, as evidenced by his support for the BDS movement, has further fueled tensions within his constituency. While the congressman views BDS as a nonviolent form of protest to hold Israel accountable, pro-Israel activists see it as antisemitic and detrimental to Israel’s interests.
In contrast, Bowman’s opponent, George Latimer, has garnered support from groups like AIPAC, with more than two-fifths of his campaign funds coming from the organization. Bowman, on the other hand, has accused AIPAC of trying to influence the race through financial means.
Former Rep. Mondaire Jones, a progressive who previously represented a neighboring district, has opted to endorse Latimer, citing differences in views on Israel. This endorsement underscores the growing divide within the Democratic Party over the Israel-Hamas conflict and related issues.
Despite facing criticism, Bowman has received endorsements from organizations like New York’s Working Families Party and the Democratic Socialists of America. His supporters praise his efforts to introduce legislation aimed at helping families on government assistance, highlighting his commitment to social justice.
As the election approaches, Bowman is poised to face Dr. Miriam Flisser, a pediatric consultant and former mayor of Scarsdale, as the Republican candidate. However, with the district being rated D+20 by the Cook Partisan Voting Index, the Democratic nominee is expected to have a significant advantage in the November election.
