Ad targets vulnerable senator for poor record on key issue, earns ‘F- rating’

Bernie Moreno, a businessman running for Senate as a Republican, has released a scathing ad targeting incumbent Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown. The ad takes aim at Brown’s connections to President Biden’s policies and his stance on immigration issues.

In a video featured in the ad, Brown is seen stating, “Biden’s politics now are not much different than mine,” which is followed by accusations that Brown shares Biden’s open border agenda. The ad highlights Brown’s alleged refusal to fund efforts to detain and deport criminal illegal immigrants, as evidenced by a 2021 roll call vote on Senate Amendment 3742.

Furthermore, the ad references Brown’s dismissive remarks about the border wall, calling it “stupid” and “wrong” in multiple interviews over the years. Brown’s rating on immigration is depicted as an “F-,” with claims that his policies have contributed to an influx of drugs and crime through the broken border.

One Nation, a group connected to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, also ran an ad critiquing Brown’s immigration record, pointing out supposed inconsistencies in his approach to the border crisis. Brown’s track record of voting in alignment with Biden and his stances on immigration are anticipated to be focal points in the upcoming campaign.

On the other hand, Brown has criticized Moreno on abortion issues and enlisted actor Martin Sheen for an ad emphasizing his dedication to workers’ rights. A Democratic group aligned with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has also defended Brown’s immigration record and drew parallels between his policies and those of former President Trump.

The Moreno campaign has scrutinized Brown’s voting history on immigration, particularly highlighting Brown’s rejection of a proposal in 2013 that would have delayed granting permanent legal status to many illegal immigrants until a 700-mile double-layered border fence was constructed. The campaign accuses Brown of consistently voting against deportations, funding for the border wall, and in favor of mass amnesty, sanctuary cities, and taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal immigrants.

The upcoming race between Brown and Moreno has garnered significant attention nationwide. Ohio is seen as a crucial battleground, with Republicans eyeing it as a key opportunity to regain control of the Senate, currently held by Democrats with a narrow margin. With Ohio being a state that Trump won decisively in 2020 and is projected to carry again, the race is expected to be closely contested.
