Artists had to choose which song to submit for Grammy Record of the Year
When it comes to the Grammy competition for record of the year, artists face the tough decision of selecting their best work to submit. It’s a strategic move to choose the strongest entry to avoid splitting votes among multiple hits. Billie Eilish, known for her success in this category, decided to enter her hit ballad “Birds of a Feather” after having two top five hits during the eligibility year. This would mark Eilish’s fifth nomination in the record of the year category, with previous wins for “bad guy” and “Everything I Wanted.”
Taylor Swift, with a plethora of hits throughout the year, opted for “Fortnight,” her collaboration with Post Malone that debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100. This could potentially be Swift’s sixth nomination in the record of the year category, a title she has yet to win.
Ariana Grande’s camp selected “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” as her submission, showcasing her ninth No. 1 hit. This choice could secure Grande’s second nomination in the record of the year category, following her previous nomination for “7 Rings.”
Beyoncé’s entry, “Texas Hold ‘Em,” marked her ninth No. 1 hit on the Hot 100 and could potentially earn her ninth nomination in the record of the year category, a title she has yet to secure.
Other notable submissions include Future’s “Like That” with collaborators Metro Boomin and Kendrick Lamar, as well as 21 Savage’s “Redrum.”
Surprises in the submissions included Megan Thee Stallion entering “Mamushi” featuring Yuki Chiba instead of her chart-topping hit “Hiss” and J. Cole submitting “H.Y.B.” featuring Bas and Central Cee over his top 10 hit “7 Minute Drill.”
Teddy Swims opted for an alternate version of his No. 1 hit “Lose Control” titled “Lose Control (The Village Sessions)” due to the original release falling outside the eligibility year.
Interestingly, some artists with top 10 hits like Zach Bryan, Drake, and Cardi B did not submit entries for the record of the year category, showcasing the variety and decisions made by artists in the music industry.
