Atlanta newspaper says Biden should quit running for president

President Biden is facing mounting pressure to step out of the presidential election after a lackluster debate performance on Thursday night. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) Editorial Board has called for Biden to bow out “for the good” of the country and to thwart former President Trump’s chances of returning to office.

The editorial published by the AJC on Sunday criticized Biden for failing to articulate a compelling vision for America’s future during the debate. They highlighted his inability to showcase his platform’s key aspects, acknowledge his administration’s accomplishments, and counter his opponent’s falsehoods effectively.

The AJC slammed Biden’s surrogates for trying to cover up his subpar performance, noting that former President Obama and Vice President Kamala Harris’s responses were “insulting to the American people.” The board raised concerns about Biden’s age and mental acuity, suggesting that Trump’s potential return to power increases the urgency for Biden to step aside.

Pointing to Trump’s behavior following the 2020 election, the AJC underscored the need for a new Democratic leader who can unify the nation and offer a compelling alternative to the Republican camp. They urged Biden to gracefully hand over the reins to a younger Democratic figure at the upcoming convention in August.

The AJC noted that Biden’s candidacy was initially considered the strongest in terms of defeating Trump; however, they argued that this is no longer the case. While acknowledging the difficulty of accepting this reality for some Democrats, the board emphasized that the truth must prevail in the interest of the country.

The editorial concluded by calling on Biden to emulate the dignity of the nation’s first president and retire with honor, acknowledging that he has served the country with dedication throughout his political career.

Notably, the AJC’s call for Biden to step down aligns with The New York Times’ similar appeal, emphasizing that the urgency of preventing a second Trump term should guide the Democratic Party’s decision-making process.

Despite the growing pressure on Biden to withdraw, he showed no signs of backing down during a rally in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he affirmed his readiness to take on Trump once again. Biden acknowledged his debate shortcomings and the challenges of debating effectively but expressed confidence in his ability to lead the nation forward.

As Democrats and liberal media figures grapple with the fallout from Biden’s debate performance, the debate over his candidacy’s viability intensifies. The prospect of a Biden successor emerging and navigating the complex path to the presidency raises questions about the party’s future direction and ability to rally voters across party lines.

In the face of mounting scrutiny and calls for change, Biden stands at a pivotal crossroads in his political career. Whether he chooses to persist in the face of adversity or gracefully step aside remains to be seen, but the impact of this decision on the upcoming election and the country’s future cannot be understated.
