Bernie Sanders: 2024 Election Isn’t About Looks

Senator Bernie Sanders is a vocal advocate for prioritizing policy over age when evaluating President Joe Biden’s leadership. In a recent appearance on “Face the Nation,” Sanders emphasized the importance of focusing on the substance of Biden’s policies rather than his age or physical abilities.

Sanders expressed that the American people should not view the presidential race as a competition based on appearances or stage presence, comparing it to a Grammy Award contest for the best singer. Despite acknowledging Biden’s age and potential limitations, Sanders highlighted the significance of examining which candidate’s policies would benefit the majority of the population.

Highlighting Biden’s positions on corporate taxes, Medicare expansion, and Social Security, Sanders urged for a focus on the substantive policy discussions rather than superficial attributes. He emphasized that the critical factors in assessing a candidate should be their commitment to supporting the elderly, children, working class, and the poor.

While conceding that Biden had a lackluster debate performance in the past, Sanders noted an improvement in Biden’s subsequent appearances and emphasized the necessity for continued progress. Despite concerns about Biden’s performance, Sanders reiterated his belief that the primary focus should be on policy and the candidate’s dedication to addressing the needs of the American people.

Amidst calls from some House Democrats for Biden to step down, prominent Democratic leaders like Sanders, Nancy Pelosi, and Barack Obama have reaffirmed their support for Biden. Despite the pressure, Biden remains resolute in his commitment to staying in the race, as demonstrated in a recent interview with George Stephanopoulos on ABC.

During the interview, Biden asserted his determination to continue in the race, stating that even if a divine intervention were to instruct him to withdraw, he would persist in his campaign. This unwavering resolve indicates Biden’s determination and commitment to his candidacy despite challenges and calls for change within the Democratic Party.

Sanders, along with other Democratic leaders, underscores the importance of prioritizing policy substance over age or physical capabilities in evaluating presidential candidates. This stance reflects a broader commitment to focusing on the needs and concerns of the American people rather than engaging in superficial or performative assessments of political leadership.
