Bernie Sanders wants to stop US military aid to Israel
Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont made a bold statement about U.S. military aid to Israel and the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Despite a recent State Department report, Sanders said that Israel should not receive any more financial support from the U.S.
In an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Sanders criticized Israel for allegedly breaking international and American laws. He pointed out the devastating impact of the conflict on the Palestinian people and called for a halt to military aid to Israel.
The State Department report mentioned by Sanders criticized Israel’s use of U.S.-supplied arms and their handling of civilian casualties in Gaza. The report highlighted the challenges of assessing the situation accurately in an active war zone.
According to Sanders, the Palestinian government reported alarming numbers of casualties among civilians in Gaza. He emphasized the destruction of homes, infrastructure, and essential services, painting a grim picture of the humanitarian crisis in the region.
The senator condemned any country that obstructed humanitarian aid efforts, stating that they should not be eligible for military support from the U.S. He also addressed concerns raised by House Democrats about the timing of weapon shipments to Israel during negotiations.
When asked about the impact of withholding weapons from Israel, Sanders pointed out the need for an immediate ceasefire and increased humanitarian assistance. He noted the differing opinions among Republicans, Democrats, and the American people on the issue.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s department sent a report to Congress confirming violations of international law by Israel in its conflict with Hamas. Sanders highlighted the growing international criticism of Israel and emphasized the need for a non-military solution to the Hamas threat.
Despite the challenges posed by Hamas, Sanders stressed the importance of seeking a resolution that safeguards the rights and aspirations of the Palestinian people. He expressed hope for a future generation of Palestinian leaders dedicated to peace and self-determination.
