Biden does not support full-term abortion as proposed by RFK Jr, campaign confirms

President Biden’s re-election campaign made it clear that the president is not in favor of “full-term abortions”, creating a distinction from a stance taken by one of his rivals in the White House race.

Lauren Hitt, a senior spokesperson for the campaign, stated, “No, the president doesn’t support full-term abortions, as he’s made clear many times. He thinks Roe got it right.”

Democratic National Committee (DNC) communications adviser Lis Smith also emphasized the president’s position by saying, “He’s said he would sign a national abortion ban and has repeatedly dismissed the importance of abortion rights on the campaign trail. With reproductive freedom under attack, we need leaders who will stand strong for women.”

Following the Supreme Court’s decision in June 2022 to overturn Roe v. Wade and return the abortion issue to individual states, abortion has taken center stage on the political trail, with Democratic campaigns prioritizing it in their messaging.

Former President Trump has been a target of criticism by Biden over this issue, with the president accusing Trump of stripping away women’s rights in America during a speech at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Florida on April 23.

Although Biden believes “Roe got it right,” some like SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser disagree, claiming that Roe allows late-term abortions on healthy babies.

With several Republican-led states passing restrictive abortion laws and Democrats winning initiatives in states to expand abortion access, the issue has become deeply polarized in the political landscape.

During an appearance on “The Sage Steele Show,” one of Biden’s challengers, Kennedy, defended his position on late-term abortions, stating that the decision should be up to the woman and not the state, even in full-term cases.

Kennedy’s abortion stance gained attention last year when he reportedly endorsed limiting abortions to 15 or 21 weeks into pregnancy, though his campaign later clarified that he does not support legislation banning abortion.

The debate over abortion rights and restrictions continues to be a contentious issue in American politics, with both sides advocating strongly for their beliefs and promoting their preferred candidates who align with their views.

As the 2024 election draws nearer, the discussion surrounding abortion and women’s reproductive rights is expected to remain a key topic of debate among politicians and voters alike.
