Biden is likely to support term limits for Supreme Court justices, according to report.

President Joe Biden is stepping up to endorse a set of bold changes to the U.S. Supreme Court, in a move that could rally party liberals to his side as he faces calls to end his reelection bid. According to the Washington Post, Biden is gearing up to back reforms such as term limits for justices and a code of conduct that can be enforced.

During a video conference call with the Congressional Progressive Caucus on Saturday, Biden hinted at his support for a constitutional amendment aimed at reversing the recent Supreme Court decision involving former President Donald Trump’s immunity from criminal charges for official actions.

Implementing these proposed changes to the Supreme Court would require approval from Congress, which seems highly unlikely in an election year. Additionally, Republicans could use a filibuster to block the reforms even if Democrats maintain a majority in the Senate after the November elections.

For Biden, this reported shift towards court reform represents a significant departure from his previous stance. While he previously ordered a study of the judiciary, including the Supreme Court, he took minimal action at the time.

The President was quoted by the Post as saying, “I’m about to come out with a major initiative on limiting the court. I’ve been working with constitutional scholars for the last three months, and I need some help.” This indicates a new determination on Biden’s part to tackle the issue of Supreme Court reform.

Democrats have been increasingly critical of the Supreme Court in recent years, especially due to the conservative majority that has resulted in several controversial decisions. One such ruling in 2022 overturned the long-standing precedent of Roe v. Wade, allowing states to impose restrictions on abortions.

In June, the Supreme Court also eliminated the Chevron deference principle, which had been a cornerstone supporting the government’s regulatory authority. This move has significant implications as it weakens agencies’ ability to implement regulations without waiting for court challenges to play out.

Furthermore, the Supreme Court faced heightened scrutiny following reports from ProPublica revealing undisclosed expensive gifts to conservative justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas. The lack of transparency surrounding these gifts prompted Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to initiate impeachment proceedings against the two justices.

President Biden’s pivot towards pushing for Supreme Court reform reflects a significant shift in his approach to the judiciary. While the road ahead may be challenging, with obstacles from Congress and potential opposition from Republicans, Biden’s determination to address issues within the Supreme Court underscores his commitment to effecting change.
