Biden meets with Democratic governors as his campaign faces challenges

President Biden is set to meet with Democratic governors to address concerns over his health and mental well-being. The meeting, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the White House, comes in the wake of growing unease following Biden’s lackluster debate performance against former President Trump.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, head of the Democratic Governors Association, is already in Washington, D.C., and will be present at the meeting. Other governors, including California’s Gavin Newsom, Kentucky’s Andy Beshear, and Illinois’ J. B. Pritzker, will also be in attendance.

Pritzker expressed his support for Biden, stating, “I honor my commitments. Joe Biden is going to be our nominee, unless he decides otherwise. And so I think that there’s a healthy conversation that will happen with the president, I hope, expressing, you know, what he intends to do going forward in the campaign and reassuring everybody that this is the right course.”

Despite attempts by the White House to downplay concerns over Biden’s mental acuity, with dismissals of gaffes as “cheap fakes” and misinformation, Rep. Ronny Jackson, a former White House physician who served across multiple administrations, has raised doubts about Biden’s current state compared to his time as vice president.

Jackson, who worked closely with Biden during the Obama administration, remarked, “I was in the White House when Joe Biden was VP, and the man we’ve seen since announcing his candidacy is not the same man who was VP for 8 years.”

The aftermath of the debate has seen a wave of criticism from both media outlets and Democratic Party members. Calls for Biden to step aside before the election have come from unlikely corners, with traditional left-wing allies such as the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune suggesting that Biden should outline an exit plan.

Despite these calls, Biden’s allies, including former President Obama and First Lady Jill Biden, continue to pledge their unwavering support for his re-election bid. The divide within the party reflects a broader concern over Biden’s ability to carry out a successful campaign.

As the meeting approaches, all eyes are on Biden and the decisions he may make moving forward. The outcome of this gathering could have significant implications for the Democratic Party and the upcoming presidential election.
