Biden supporter Newsom says Democrats asking president to resign are not being helpful

California Governor Gavin Newsom, a top surrogate for President Biden’s re-election campaign, has been responding to calls within the Democratic Party urging the president to step aside in light of his recent debate performance against former President Trump. Newsom made his remarks while campaigning for Biden in New Hampshire, emphasizing that the majority of the party’s caucus still supports Biden despite the public and private pressure for him to withdraw from the race.

After a disappointing debate where concerns were raised about Biden’s age and mental acuity, calls for him to drop out as the Democratic nominee for the 2024 election have been mounting. However, Biden remains steadfast in his commitment to staying in the race and defeating Trump, urging the party to remain united and focused on the ultimate goal of winning the election.

White House officials have come to Biden’s defense, denying reports that he is being treated for Parkinson’s disease or any other health issues. Newsom, who has spent considerable time with the president, expressed his confidence in Biden’s cognitive abilities and dismissed concerns about his fitness for office.

Despite post-debate polls showing Trump with a lead over Biden, a recent Bloomberg-Morning Consult poll suggested that Biden is gaining ground in key battleground states. Newsom’s name has been floated as a potential replacement should Biden withdraw from the race, but the governor attributed the media attention to intentional distractions aimed at undermining the Democratic campaign.

While Newsom acknowledged the speculation surrounding his possible candidacy, he remained focused on supporting Biden’s re-election efforts and helping down-ballot Democrats in the upcoming elections. Newsom’s presence in New Hampshire, a state known for its influential role in presidential primaries, has generated buzz about a potential 2028 presidential bid.

Newsom’s visit to New Hampshire is part of a broader trend of high-profile Democrats, including Vice President Kamala Harris, positioning themselves for potential future runs for higher office. As the political landscape continues to evolve, Newsom’s interactions with party leaders and activists in key states like New Hampshire could shape his political trajectory in the years to come.
