Biden talks about Trump’s role in Capitol riot and police officers’ deaths at memorial event.

President Biden Honors Capitol Police Officers at Memorial Service

President Joe Biden paid tribute to the brave law enforcement officers who defended the Capitol during the January 6, 2021, insurrection at a police officers’ memorial ceremony on Wednesday. Speaking at the annual National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service on the west lawn of the Capitol building, Biden reiterated his gratitude for the officers who risked their lives to protect democracy on that fateful day.

While the President did not directly mention former President Donald Trump by name, his praise for the officers highlighted a clear distinction between his leadership and his predecessor’s actions. Trump, who spread baseless claims of election fraud and incited the violent mob that attacked the Capitol, has failed to acknowledge the sacrifices made by the 140 Capitol and Washington, D.C., police officers who were injured, or the five who tragically lost their lives in the aftermath of the insurrection.

Instead of condemning the attackers, Trump has continued to glorify them and even offered pardons to convicted rioters. His actions stand in stark contrast to Biden’s recognition of the officers’ heroism. In fact, Biden has previously awarded these officers with the Presidential Citizens Medal in a ceremony at the White House and signed legislation to extend death benefits to the families of those who died by suicide following the events of January 6th.

Despite the lack of acknowledgment from Trump, several police unions have endorsed his candidacy for the upcoming presidential election. However, Trump is currently facing multiple criminal charges related to his role in the insurrection and subsequent attempts to overturn the election results.

The Supreme Court is currently reviewing Trump’s claim that he is immune to federal prosecution for his actions on January 6th due to his status as president at the time. Additionally, he faces charges in Georgia for his attempts to interfere with the election results and is involved in a federal case regarding the withholding of documents from his time in office.

In New York City, Trump is on trial for falsifying business records in connection to a hush money payment made during the 2016 election. However, if Trump were to win the presidency again, he could potentially halt these legal proceedings and evade accountability for his actions.
