Biden to Give Medal of Freedom to Pelosi, Gore, Ledecky, and Others

President Joe Biden is set to honor 19 remarkable Americans with the prestigious Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Among the distinguished recipients are former Vice President Al Gore, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, former Secretary of State John Kerry, Rep. Jim Clyburn, champion swimmer Katie Ledecky, and award-winning actress Michelle Yeoh.

The grand ceremony will take place at the White House on Friday, where President Biden will personally present the medals to these outstanding individuals. The White House stated that these recipients have contributed significantly to shaping America for the better through their teamwork, leadership, and dedication to service.

The Medal of Freedom is awarded to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, as well as contributing to world peace or other significant societal endeavors. This year’s honorees also include former New York City mayor and philanthropist Michael Bloomberg and former Red Cross President Elizabeth Dole, among others.

Notable recipients on the list also include journalist and television host Phil Donahue, civil rights activist Clarence Jones, veteran astronaut Ellen Ochoa, and United Farm Workers President Teresa Romero, to name a few. In a heartfelt gesture, three posthumous medals will be awarded to former New Jersey Sen. Frank Lautenberg, civil rights activist Medgar Evers, and Olympic gold medalist Jim Thorpe.

President Biden himself is a recipient of the Medal of Freedom, having been honored by President Barack Obama in 2017 during his tenure as vice president. The Medal of Freedom serves as a testament to the remarkable contributions and achievements of these individuals, highlighting their immense impact on society.
