Biden’s Ad Says Trump Could Act Like a King After Supreme Court Decision
President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign has released a new ad warning of the dangers of a potential Donald Trump presidency following this week’s Supreme Court ruling granting presidents broad immunity from criminal prosecution.
In the ad, the narrator emphasizes the founding principles of America, stating that no one, not even the president, is above the law. The narrator expresses concern that this principle is now in jeopardy, given the recent Supreme Court decision.
The ad points out that the same Supreme Court that overturned Roe v. Wade has ruled in favor of allowing the president to potentially ignore the law, even to the extent of committing a crime, at the request of Donald Trump. The narrator highlights Trump’s past actions, including leading an insurrection and making threats of dictatorship, as reasons why he should never hold office again.
Biden’s campaign has announced that the ad will be aired in battleground states and on networks that attract younger and more diverse audiences, such as ESPN, Bravo, and Comedy Central.
On Monday, the Supreme Court, in a controversial 6-3 decision, granted Trump immunity from legal prosecution for certain actions related to the January 6, 2021 insurrection. The court deemed that certain actions deemed “official” in nature, such as conversations with Justice Department officials, would be shielded from legal liability.
The case has been sent back to a lower court to determine which specific actions alleged in the indictment for election subversion are immune from prosecution, including pressuring local officials to create fraudulent elector slates in states Trump lost in the 2020 election.
While the decision has been seen as a victory for Trump, as it effectively prevents a trial on election subversion charges before the 2024 election, Biden has criticized the ruling as setting a dangerous precedent that alters the balance of power within the presidency.
According to Biden, the Supreme Court’s decision now grants all presidents, including Trump, the ability to disregard the law. Biden expressed his concerns during an address at the White House, calling the ruling a fundamental reshaping of the presidency’s capabilities.
Biden’s campaign spokesperson, Michael Tyler, raised additional concerns, suggesting that the decision could allow Trump to pursue his agenda without constraints. Tyler referenced Trump’s campaign promises, including threats to dismantle the Constitution, imprison political opponents, and exercise dictatorial powers if given the opportunity, as reasons for apprehension.
The release of the ad coincides with heightened speculation about Biden’s political future following a lackluster debate performance against Trump. Some Democrats have urged Biden to step aside from the 2024 race in favor of a younger candidate, citing concerns about the potential threat to democracy posed by a Trump presidency.
Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas) expressed his hopes that Biden, recognizing the greater good of the country over personal ambition, would make the difficult decision to withdraw from the race.
