Education Secretary Miguel Cardona faced a tough grilling on Capitol Hill on Tuesday regarding the handling of Title VI investigations in universities with antisemitic protests. The Senate appropriations subcommittee meeting discussed the president’s fiscal year 2025 budget request for the U.S. Department of Education, with Senator Shelley Moore Capito pressing Cardona on the issue.
Capito emphasized the importance of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin in programs receiving federal financial assistance. She pointed out recent incidents at Columbia University, where Jewish students were advised to go home due to safety concerns and protesters took over campus buildings, calling the situation “totally unacceptable.”
In response, Cardona condemned the antisemitic actions, stating that hate has no place on campuses and that the Department of Education is committed to enforcing Title VI. He mentioned the 137 open cases of possible Title VI violations, including at Columbia University, and proposed a $22 million increase in the budget to enhance investigations.
When asked about defunding universities that do not address antisemitism or violate Title IV, Cardona expressed support for the safety of Jewish students on campuses. He underscored the need for better protection and emphasized rejecting any calls for genocide or antisemitism in the academic environment.

Despite challenges, Cardona vowed to prioritize student safety and combat antisemitism on campuses effectively. He acknowledged the need for swift action and emphasized the Department of Education’s commitment to upholding Title VI regulations.
