Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins Says Taylor Swift is Talented

When it comes to the length of Taylor Swift’s latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins is nothing but impressed. In a recent interview with the Irish Times, Corgan defended Swift’s decision to include a staggering 31 songs on her new project, showering her with high praise along the way.

“Taylor Swift is one of the most gifted pop artists of all time,” Corgan expressed to the publication. “How could it be a bad thing that she’s releasing more music? I can’t understand that… You have the option to just skip it on Spotify.”

Reflecting on the criticism he faced for the length of his band’s previous album, Atum, released in 2023, Corgan challenged the notion that more music is a negative thing. “I thought, ‘Well, just go make your own playlist. Just listen to the record once – pick out the six or ten songs you like and create your own album.’ Why is this such a foreign concept?” he questioned.

As Corgan continued to make the case for the extended runtime of The Tortured Poets, he also took a moment to mention his late friend, Sinéad O’Connor, the Irish singer-songwriter who passed away last year at the age of 56.

“Let’s talk about Sinéad for a moment,” Corgan shifted the conversation. “Now that Sinéad is no longer with us, would it be a negative thing if someone were to come forward tomorrow and say, ‘Hey, I just discovered this tape, and there are enough songs for 20, 30, or even 50 new Sinéad songs.’ Would that be a bad thing?”

Ultimately, Corgan’s defense of Taylor Swift’s lengthy album and his musings on the posthumous release of new music from artists like Sinéad O’Connor invite listeners to reevaluate their perspectives on the value of more music and the legacy it can leave behind.
