Black Lives Matter accuses Democrats of hypocrisy for choosing Harris without public vote.
Black Lives Matter, a prominent left-wing organization that gained national recognition in 2020 for advocating against racial injustice, is challenging the Democratic Party’s decision to nominate Vice President Kamala Harris as the presumptive Democratic nominee. The group is urging the Democratic National Convention to implement a more inclusive and transparent process for selecting candidates, rather than relying solely on party delegates.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Black Lives Matter criticized the current nomination process, stating that a quick decision made behind closed doors without public input is undemocratic and not reflective of the values Democrats claim to uphold. The organization emphasized the importance of including the voices of ordinary citizens in the selection of party nominees, highlighting the need for a more democratic approach to decision-making.
Following President Biden’s withdrawal from the race and his endorsement of Harris as the new front-runner, the Democratic Party swiftly rallied around her candidacy, securing enough delegate support for her nomination at the upcoming DNC convention in August. However, Black Lives Matter, a group that historically aligns with the Democratic Party, is questioning the legitimacy of this process, calling for a more inclusive and participatory method for selecting nominees.
The organization insisted that delegates should not be seen as oligarchs, and the Democratic Party should prioritize engaging with the broader public in the nomination process. Black Lives Matter demanded that the DNC conduct a nationwide snap primary before the convention to ensure that the voices of Black voters and other marginalized communities are heard and respected.
Black Lives Matter expressed concern that the current approach by Democratic Party elites and wealthy donors to handpick nominees without public input undermines democratic principles and alienates voters. The group emphasized the need for a more transparent and democratic nomination process that reflects the values of inclusivity and accountability.
Shalomyah Bowers, a leader within Black Lives Matter, emphasized that the push for a more participatory and community-engaged nomination process is not a critique of Kamala Harris or Black women in leadership positions. Rather, it is a call for a fair and democratic approach to candidate selection that involves input from diverse communities across the country.
Efforts to seek a response from the Harris campaign regarding these concerns were unsuccessful at the time of press. Black Lives Matter continues to advocate for a more democratic and transparent nomination process within the Democratic Party, emphasizing the need for inclusive decision-making and broader public engagement in the political landscape.
