Blackburn criticizes Secret Service chief for attending RNC after Trump attack

Republican Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn has made a resounding demand for the Secret Service Director, Kimberly Cheatle, to address questions regarding the recent assassination attempt against former President Trump. During the third night of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Blackburn, along with fellow GOP Senators John Barrasso, James Lankford, and Kevin Cramer, confronted Cheatle about the security lapses that allowed the assassination attempt to occur at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The image captured Senators Marsha Blackburn and John Barrasso having a heated exchange with Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle.

Amidst the confrontation, Barrasso could be heard accusing Cheatle of “stonewalling,” while Blackburn emphasized the seriousness of the situation by stating, “This was an assassination attempt, you owe the people answers, you owe President Trump answers.”

Despite the pressure, Cheatle was seen attending the RNC viewing speakers from a luxury box before Ohio Sen. JD Vance’s upcoming speech as Trump’s running mate was announced.

Despite the escalating tensions, Cheatle remained firm in her position and dismissed the lawmakers’ demands by stating, “I don’t think that this is the forum to have this discussion.”

Cheatle has stood her ground and refused to step down in the face of growing calls for accountability in addressing how a gunman was able to open fire on Trump and rally attendees last Saturday in Pennsylvania.

A statement from Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi highlighted that Cheatle’s focus remains on maintaining continuity of operations during critical incidents. The Secret Service Director is committed to leading the agency through the internal investigation process and implementing necessary improvements based on the reviews that follow.

The chaos ensued at Trump’s campaign rally on Saturday when gunshots disrupted the event. Trump, reacting quickly, clutched his ear and then sought cover on the floor as Secret Service agents shielded him and evacuated him from the stage. His right ear was visibly bleeding as he was rushed away for safety.

The perpetrator, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, not only injured Trump but also harmed two attendees and tragically claimed the life of a 50-year-old father, Corey Comperatore.

In the aftermath of the incident, criticism and inquiries have been directed at Cheatle, with increasing calls for her resignation due to the evident security lapse that endangered the lives of many at the rally.

The heightened security measures at the Republican National Convention were apparent post the shooting, with law enforcement officers from various jurisdictions bolstering security across the convention premises.

The situation continues to evolve as lawmakers, security officials, and the public seek transparency, accountability, and improvements in security protocols to prevent such alarming incidents in the future.
