Blinken Urges Immediate Cease-fire in Gaza after Hamas Leader Killed in Iran
Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the urgent need for a cease-fire in Gaza following the reported assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran. Blinken made these remarks during a forum in Singapore, highlighting the critical importance of halting the violence to promote peace and stability in the region.
The killing of Haniyeh took place shortly after his attendance at Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s swearing-in ceremony in Tehran, where chants of “Death to America, Israel” were heard. While Iran has not disclosed any details regarding Haniyeh’s death, the incident is currently under investigation.
Although Israel was promptly accused of carrying out the assassination, no party has claimed responsibility for the killing as of Wednesday morning. The incident is viewed as a significant development that underscores Israel’s uncompromising stance against threats posed by entities like Hamas and Hezbollah.
Secretary Blinken underscored the United States’ commitment to mitigating tensions in the region, while also reaffirming its support for Israel’s right to self-defense in the face of potential threats. The U.S. Defense Secretary, Lloyd Austin, emphasized that the U.S. government would work towards de-escalation but stood prepared to assist in defending Israel if necessary.
Following Haniyeh’s death, Hamas mourned his passing and declared him a “martyr,” praising his contributions to the Palestinian cause. Haniyeh had been living in exile in Qatar for the past five years, having departed Gaza during that time. Notably, the current top Hamas leader in Gaza is Yahya Sinwar, known for orchestrating a terror attack on Israel in October.
