Bob Good’s primary race is too close to call, he plans to request a recount.

The race for Virginia’s 5th District GOP congressional primary is heating up as votes are still being counted and tensions are running high between Republican candidates John McGuire and incumbent Rep. Bob Good. McGuire, a NAVY Seal with the backing of former President Donald Trump, currently leads Good by 330 votes according to the Virginia Department of Elections.

Good, who has been in office since 2020, expressed concerns about the canvassing process during an interview with Steve Bannon on his War Room podcast. He mentioned discrepancies in the counting process and announced plans for a “full recount” with a team of lawyers to investigate any suspicions of malfeasance.

The canvassing process is set to continue until Tuesday, June 25, with the State Board of Elections scheduled to certify the results on July 2. Candidates will then have until July 12 to submit a recount petition, indicating that the final outcome of the race may still be up in the air.

Despite the uncertainty, McGuire celebrated what he believed to be a victory on social media, thanking his supporters, family, and former President Trump for their endorsement. The intense competition between Good and McGuire has made this primary one of the most closely watched races of the 2024 election cycle.

The race in Virginia’s Fifth Congressional District has exposed deep divisions within the Republican party, with Good drawing criticism from GOP colleagues for his shifting alliances and controversies within the party. Good’s endorsement of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis over Trump and his role in ousting Kevin McCarthy as speaker last year have alienated both Washington insiders and Trump supporters.

With Trump’s endorsement of McGuire and a tele-rally held for his challenger on the eve of the primary, Good faces an uphill battle to secure another term in office. As chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, Good’s defeat could further complicate the group’s influence in Washington, making this race a crucial test of strength between establishment Republicans and Trump allies.

Good emphasized the broader implications of the race, framing it as a battle against the Washington “swamp” and the establishment’s efforts to regain control. The outcome of this primary could set the tone for the upcoming November election and determine the direction of the GOP moving forward.

This race has become a microcosm of the larger struggle within the Republican party, highlighting the tensions between traditional conservatives and the growing influence of Trump’s base. With McGuire’s lead in the polls and Good’s uphill battle for reelection, the Virginia 5th District primary has become a battleground for the soul of the party.
