Boebert is raising money for female Olympic athlete who lost to a boxer banned from women’s events.

Exclusive: Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., is championing a cause close to her heart – seeking to raise funds equivalent to a gold medal for an Olympic athlete who faced a controversial defeat. Italian boxer Angela Carini competed in the 66-kilogram women’s division Olympic boxing match Thursday but left the fight just 45 seconds in after receiving hard hits from her opponent.

Carini, visibly upset, later shared her feelings, saying, “I didn’t give up, but one punch hurt too much, and so I said enough.” The opponent, Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, had previously failed gender eligibility tests due to having male chromosomes.

International Boxing Association President Umar Kremlev confirmed that Khelif was disqualified during the 2023 World Championships after DNA tests revealed XY chromosomes, indicating an attempt to deceive by posing as a woman. Despite this, Khelif was allowed to compete in the Olympics, causing widespread controversy.

Rep. Boebert expressed her dismay at the situation, highlighting the dangerous precedent set by allowing a biologically male individual to compete against women in a physical sport like boxing. She emphasized the importance of standing up against such injustices and called for an end to this practice.

Boebert voiced her concerns, stating, “It’s disgusting. And at what point are we going to say enough is enough and call for an end to this?… And it’s not OK when it’s on the world stage next, where women are being defeated by men.” She urged supporters to contribute to a fundraising campaign on Give Send Go to directly support Angela Carini.
