CEO of United Record Pressing Vinyl Plant Talks About Achieving Milestone and Company History

Making a stop on his biking journey across Iowa, Mark Michaels, the chairman/CEO of United Record Pressing, found himself reflecting on the company’s remarkable history. As the oldest and largest American-owned, U.S.-based vinyl pressing plant in the world, United is set to celebrate its 75th anniversary this fall, a milestone that Michaels holds close to his heart.

Speaking from his office in Nashville, surrounded by signed records from music legends like Buddy Guy and Jack White, Michaels reminisces about the moments of euphoria and gratitude that he often overlooks in the hustle and bustle of running the plant. He recalls a time in 2014 when Jack White made history by recording, pressing, and releasing a 7-inch single in under four hours, thanks to URP. These moments serve as a reminder to pause and reflect on the journey of United Record Pressing.

In 2007, Michaels took over United just as the vinyl format was beginning its resurgence, helping the company navigate a challenging period when demand for promotional DJ singles drastically declined. The company faced another test of resilience during the coronavirus pandemic in the early 2020s when vinyl sales skyrocketed. Michaels and his team rose to the occasion by expanding the plant, investing in new infrastructure, equipment, and presses to meet the growing demand.

Today, United Record Pressing stands stronger than ever, with a dedicated team of 130 employees sporting anniversary T-shirts showcasing the plant’s evolution over the years. The energy at the plant is vibrant as they prepare to celebrate their 75 years of history with partners, customers, and supporters of the format. There is a renewed sense of pride and interest in the work they do, fueling their commitment to preserving the legacy for the next 75 years.

Michaels emphasizes the importance of maintaining the integrity of the process and the workforce in Music City, reflecting on the iconic records that United has pressed over the years. From the first Beatles record in America to Motown classics, the plant’s rich history and expertise are a testament to its enduring legacy. Michaels is determined to uphold this legacy and ensure that United Record Pressing remains a beacon of excellence in the industry.
