Checking the facts from the Republican National Convention, Day 4.
Welcome to Boston Post News, where we bring you the latest updates on the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. On the fourth and final night of the RNC, a lineup of prominent speakers took the stage, including GOP presidential nominee and former President Donald Trump, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, conservative commentator Tucker Carlson, wrestling icon Hulk Hogan, and Trump’s son, Eric Trump.
CBS News is on the ground covering the RNC live, fact-checking some of the statements made by the speakers. Let’s dive into some of the key claims made during the convention and separate fact from fiction.
Former President Donald Trump boasted about enacting “the biggest tax cuts ever” during his administration. However, a closer look reveals that the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act does not hold that title. According to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, the tax cuts rank as the eighth largest by percentage of GDP since 1918 and the fourth largest in inflation-adjusted dollars since 1940.
Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claimed that the U.S. successfully destroyed ISIS and its caliphate. While significant progress was made in recapturing ISIS-held territories, the Defense Department inspector general warned of the group’s resurgence in Iraq and Syria. Affiliates of ISIS also continue to operate in other regions, debunking the notion of a complete defeat.
Pompeo also made the inaccurate claim that “not a single Chinese spy balloon flew across the United States” during the Trump administration. Contrary to his statement, Chinese surveillance balloons were documented flying over the U.S. at least three times during that period.
As we scrutinize the statements made at the 2024 RNC, it’s crucial to separate fact from fiction and critically evaluate the claims put forth by the speakers. Stay tuned as we continue to bring you the latest updates and fact-checks from the convention.
