Combatting illegal immigrants: How the Fed is using helicopters, dogs, and towers.

Border Patrol agents in the El Paso Sector have been working tirelessly to combat the movement of illegal immigrants across the southern border, and their efforts have not gone unnoticed. The enforcement strategy in place has been expanded in recent years and has proven to be effective in thwarting cartel smuggling operations and apprehending illegal immigrants trying to enter the U.S.

One of the most notable features in Sunland Park, New Mexico, is the miles of border wall that dominate the landscape. Some sections were constructed during the Obama administration, while others are part of the Trump-era bollard wall. Critics of barriers have highlighted that barriers alone are not a solution, as they can be cut through. Makeshift ladders and ropes can be found along the border, which migrants use to scale the barrier.

In areas where wall construction is not feasible, like the steep Mount Cristo Rey, the enforcement strategy relies on other methods. The Biden administration halted most border wall construction in 2021 but continued to make repairs and enhance technology. Autonomous surveillance towers (AST) have been a game-changer in border security. These towers operate 24/7, scanning the environment using radar and artificial intelligence to monitor and track groups of migrants.

The AST technology allows agents to plan ahead, even before migrants set foot on U.S. soil. It can differentiate between humans and wildlife, identify the number of people in a group, and send immediate alerts to agents in the field. The treacherous terrain in the mountains has made the deployment of surveillance towers crucial in monitoring migrants and ensuring their eventual apprehension.

Border Patrol agents, assisted by the CBP Canine Unit and helicopters from the Air and Marine Operations, work tirelessly to apprehend migrants who manage to get through the border wall. Specially trained dogs can track down migrants and smugglers, while helicopters provide additional surveillance and support for quick rescues if required.

Rescue towers have also been deployed in the sector to aid migrants in distress. These towers allow migrants to call for help by pressing a button, triggering a visible blue light that alerts agents in the vicinity. The towers have proven to be essential in preventing fatalities and aiding in the rescue of migrants facing danger.

Cooperation between state officials and Border Patrol has been vital in New Mexico, with local authorities collaborating on efforts to stop the influx of illegal immigrants. The multi-layered enforcement strategy has shown promising results, with a significant decrease in apprehensions compared to the previous year. Border Patrol officials are optimistic about the effectiveness of the strategy, citing the decrease in apprehensions and successful busts of stash houses.

The combined efforts of Border Patrol agents, advanced technology, K-9 units, and cooperation with state officials have strengthened border security in the El Paso Sector. The dedication and resilience of these agents play a crucial role in safeguarding the border and upholding national security.
