Comer asks Secret Service director to testify about investigation into Trump assassination attempt.
Rep. James Comer, R-Ky, has taken decisive action in the wake of the attempted assassination of former President Trump. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has been subpoenaed by the House Oversight and Accountability Committee chair in connection to an open investigation launched into the tragic event.
The incident occurred during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania when Trump was shot in the ear by a gunman, resulting in the loss of one rally attendee’s life. This harrowing event has prompted immediate calls from members of Congress for a comprehensive briefing on the security measures in place for the former president.
Following the assassination attempt, Comer penned a letter to Cheatle, requesting her and other Secret Service members present at the scene in Butler to attend a House Oversight and Accountability Committee hearing scheduled for July 22, 2024.
“Today, President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt when a gunman fired a weapon at him at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania,” Comer stated in his letter to Cheatle. “At least one bystander is dead.”
The Committee, in coordination with the United States Secret Service, has initiated discussions for an official briefing on the assassination attempt of President Trump. Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is also demanding answers from the Secret Service, FBI, and other relevant authorities regarding the incident at the Trump rally.
The Republican-led committee is gearing up to conduct a hearing on the assassination attempt in July, aiming to delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the event and assess the security protocols in place for public figures like President Trump.
