Date and moderator for the 2024 presidential debate announced

President Biden and former President Donald Trump are gearing up for one more epic showdown on the debate stage before the 2024 presidential election. This highly anticipated rematch is set to take place in September after both candidates formally accept their party’s nomination.

The first debate, hosted by CNN in Atlanta, took place unusually early in the election season as both candidates are still the presumptive nominees before their party conventions. The upcoming second debate will be hosted by ABC News on Tuesday, September 10th, at 9 p.m. Eastern Time.

As for the moderators of the next debate, ABC News has yet to make an announcement. The qualifications to participate remain similar to the first debate, making it unlikely for non-major party candidates to meet the ballot access and polling requirements needed to join the stage.

Candidates must earn at least 15% support in four approved national polls and be on the ballot in enough states to secure 270 votes in the Electoral College, which is the threshold needed to win the presidency.

While the upcoming second debate is the last one scheduled before the election, President Biden and Trump agreed to only two debates, bypassing the tradition of three meetings organized by the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates.

The decision to skip the commission’s debates came after criticism from both parties. President Trump accused the commission of bias against Republicans, while close advisers to President Biden viewed the commission’s procedures as outdated and restrictive.

Frank Fahrenkopf, the co-chair of the commission, revealed that top White House communications adviser Anita Dunn disliked the commission, leading President Biden’s team to negotiate directly with Trump’s campaign for the debates.

CBS News also extended an invitation to both campaigns for a vice presidential debate, set for either July 23rd or August 13th. The Biden campaign accepted the invitation, while Trump has yet to announce his running mate for the election.

The upcoming debate promises to be a riveting showdown between two political giants. Stay tuned as President Biden and former President Trump face off in a battle of wits and policies before the eyes of the nation.
