Dan Goldman gained national recognition as the chief counsel for Democrats during Trump’s first impeachment trial. Since entering Congress in January 2023, he has remained a vocal critic of Trump.
The news of his potential inclusion in the commission investigating the assassination attempt has drawn the ire of Trump’s allies, with Donald Trump Jr. leading the charge. Trump Jr. pointed out Goldman’s past remarks from a November 2023 MSNBC interview where he suggested that Trump needed to be “eliminated.” However, Goldman has since apologized for his choice of words.
“Democrats are attempting to appoint Dan Goldman to the committee investigating the assassination attempt. Just a few weeks ago, he called for DJT to be ‘eliminated.’ Perhaps not the most suitable individual for this task force,” Trump Jr. expressed on X.

In his statement on X in November 2023, Goldman clarified, “Yesterday on TV, I mistakenly used the wrong word to express the importance for America that Donald Trump doesn’t become President again. While he must be defeated, I certainly wish no harm to him and do not condone political violence. I apologize for the poor choice of words.”
Philip Letsou, the deputy communications director for the Senate Republicans’ campaign, also weighed in on the matter, stating on the site, “Democrats seem to be planning to populate the task force investigating the Trump assassination attempt with conspiracy theorists like Dan Goldman.”
The House recently passed a resolution with a unanimous 416-0 vote to establish the commission. Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has confirmed that the panel will consist of seven Republicans and six Democrats, selected by himself and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., respectively.
Rep. Mike Kelly, representing the district where the shooting occurred, is expected to secure a spot on the commission. Kelly was the sponsor of the resolution that created the task force approved by the House this week.
