Democrat who previously criticized Kamala Harris’ border policies now supports her
Rep. Don Davis of North Carolina made waves this week by breaking ranks with House Democrats to criticize Vice President Kamala Harris’ handling of the southern border. However, in a surprising turn of events, Davis announced his endorsement of Harris’ presidential campaign bid just a day later. In addition, he touted North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper as a potential running mate, calling him an “excellent” choice.
Speaking about his endorsement, Davis emphasized the high stakes of the upcoming presidential election and the need for leaders who can address crucial issues facing the country. “The stakes of this presidential election are incredibly high, with far-reaching implications,” Davis said in a statement.
While showing his support for Harris, Davis also highlighted the pressing need for the administration to tackle the ongoing migrant crisis at the southern border, which has captured the attention of voters across the nation. “These issues cannot be overlooked,” he stated firmly. Davis pledged to continue advocating for comprehensive immigration reform, emphasizing the importance of securing the border and addressing concerns impacting families in eastern North Carolina.
Republicans have been quick to criticize Harris’ approach to border security, particularly as the United States continues to grapple with a surge in illegal immigration. President Biden assigned Harris the role of “border czar” in 2021, placing her in charge of addressing the root causes of mass illegal immigration from Central and South America.
In response to mounting pressure, Harris unveiled a five-point general strategy in July 2021 aimed at combatting the underlying reasons for illegal immigration. The plan, although lacking specific policy details, focused on utilizing tools such as diplomacy, foreign assistance, public diplomacy, and sanctions to establish a fair, orderly, and humane immigration system.
Despite the criticism and challenges, Harris remains determined to address the complexities of the border crisis and work towards meaningful solutions. As the 2024 presidential race looms large on the horizon, endorsements like Rep. Davis’ serve as a reminder of the political landscape’s ever-shifting dynamics.
