Democrats are excited about Walz like they were about Harris 4 years ago.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, former President Bill Clinton, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are among the speakers scheduled for the third day of the Democratic National Convention. As excitement builds for Walz’s introduction to the nation as Kamala Harris’ vice presidential nominee, Democratic voters are overwhelmingly positive about this selection. Sixty percent of Democrats express enthusiasm for the pick, with nearly all respondents stating that they are at least satisfied with the choice.

Walz’s reception mirrors the enthusiastic response that greeted Harris when she was announced as Joe Biden’s running mate in the previous election cycle. Just before the 2020 Democratic National Convention, 58% of Democratic voters were excited about Harris’ selection. In contrast, enthusiasm within the Republican Party for Senator JD Vance, Donald Trump’s vice presidential pick, was slightly lower. Fifty-one percent of Republican voters expressed enthusiasm for Vance’s candidacy, though the majority still reported satisfaction with the choice.

Although both Harris and Walz are viewed as politically liberal, there are differences in perception based on party affiliation. Nationwide, voters see the Democratic ticket as more liberal than members of their own party do. Democratic voters view Walz as someone who will advocate strongly for their interests, a sentiment that becomes stronger among more liberal members of the party.

When it comes to influencing voter decisions, Harris supporters believe that Walz’s selection as her running mate plays a role, albeit not a decisive one. Only a quarter of Harris voters consider his selection to be a major factor in their voting choice.

The CBS News/YouGov survey conducted with 3,258 registered voters nationwide between August 14-16, 2024, provides insights into these trends. The data, weighted according to gender, age, race, and education, offers a snapshot of voter sentiment leading up to the upcoming election. With a margin of error of ±2.1 points, the survey captures the varying perspectives shaping the political landscape as the DNC unfolds.

As the convention continues, prominent figures like Walz, Clinton, and Pelosi will take the stage to address the American public. Their speeches will offer insights into the Democratic Party’s vision, highlighting key issues and priorities for the upcoming election. With the nation’s attention focused on the convention proceedings, these speakers play a crucial role in shaping public opinion and rallying support for the party’s agenda.

Walz’s address, in particular, will be a pivotal moment for both the candidate and the party, as he introduces himself to a national audience and articulates his vision for the future. As the vice presidential nominee, Walz will outline his plans and priorities, setting the stage for the Democratic ticket’s campaign in the months ahead.

Bill Clinton’s appearance at the convention also carries significance, as the former president lends his experience and perspective to the party’s message. With a wealth of political expertise and insight, Clinton’s speech is expected to resonate with viewers and underscore the stakes of the upcoming election.

Meanwhile, Nancy Pelosi’s presence at the DNC reaffirms the party’s commitment to advancing its legislative agenda and priorities. As Speaker of the House, Pelosi wields considerable influence within the party and is a key voice in shaping its direction. Her speech will highlight the party’s achievements and outline its future goals, rallying support for Democratic candidates across the country.

Overall, the third day of the DNC promises to be an engaging and impactful event, with dynamic speakers and compelling messages that resonate with voters nationwide. As the convention unfolds, the Democratic Party aims to energize supporters, unite the party behind its candidates, and present a vision for a brighter future for all Americans.
