Democrats on Capitol Hill discuss if Biden is capable of finishing his term.

Amidst growing concerns over President Biden’s mental competency, most Democrats have chosen to remain tight-lipped regarding whether he is fit to serve out the remainder of his term. However, Rep. Mike Quigley, D-Ill., broke the silence by publicly calling for Biden to withdraw his candidacy as the nominee. Despite this, he expressed confidence in the president’s ability to continue governing for the next five months.

These doubts among Democrats have emerged following Biden’s lackluster debate performance against former President Trump, leading many to privately question his ability to secure victory in the upcoming election. However, some Democratic representatives have vocally defended Biden’s fitness to serve as president.

Rep. Lou Correa, D-Calif., affirmed his belief in Biden’s capability, dubbing him “one of the most effective presidents ever.” Similarly, Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., and Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., expressed no concerns regarding Biden’s mental acuity, with Johnson confidently stating that Biden is “certainly” fit to serve the remainder of his term.

When questioned about Biden’s fitness for office, Rep. Greg Landsman, D-Ohio, echoed the sentiment of his colleagues, stating, “Yes, of course.” On the other hand, Sen. Kyrsten Sinema chose to walk away without providing a response, while Sen. Laphonza Butler, D-Calif., emphasized Biden’s status as the current president and hinted at his decision regarding the future.

Despite the internal discussions within the party, several Democratic senators have rallied behind Biden, exemplified by Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., who highlighted the overarching goal of defeating Donald Trump in the upcoming election. Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., reassured the public by asserting that while there may be concerns regarding Biden’s mental acuity, the president is actively addressing them.

On his part, President Biden has reiterated his commitment to remaining in the race and his conviction that he is the most suitable candidate to challenge and defeat Trump.
