DNC to criticize Trump in Philadelphia for his ties to Black community

When former President Donald Trump arrives at Temple University for a rally this Saturday, the Democratic National Committee has a powerful message ready for him. The party is pulling out all the stops to ensure that Trump sees their message loud and clear. They have set up a billboard, a mobile billboard, and kiosks strategically placed in buildings around the campus where the rally will be held.

The mobile billboard reads, “Donald Trump is coming to North Philly, but he can’t fool us. He’s a disaster for Black Americans.” The kiosks on campus are targeting Trump’s relationship with the Black community and young voters by showcasing President Biden’s efforts towards student loan forgiveness. Additionally, a billboard along I-95 will boldly state, “If Trump wins, Black families lose.”

Just a few days after Juneteenth, the holiday celebrating the end of slavery, reports surfaced that Trump referred to Milwaukee, the city where the Republican National Convention is scheduled to take place, as a “horrible city” during a meeting with House Republicans. Vice President Kamala Harris commented on this statement during an interview with radio host Sherwin Hughes, drawing attention to the pattern of Trump’s criticism towards cities with significant Black populations.

Harris highlighted Trump’s negative remarks about Atlanta, Baltimore, and Philadelphia, cities that have all faced Trump’s disparaging comments. Janiyah Thomas, Team Trump’s Black media director, defended these remarks by stating that Trump was criticizing failed Democratic policies in these cities and that the residents are yearning for change. Thomas also noted that the Trump campaign is actively engaging with minority voters, accusing Biden’s campaign of misleading Black voters.

Black voters played a crucial role in Biden’s victory in 2020 and in securing the Democratic nomination. However, there are signs that support within the Black community may be wavering. A CBS News poll revealed that while 81% of Black voters would support Biden over Trump, 69% believed that things would be better for them if Trump were reelected.

Seeking to strengthen ties with the Black community, Trump recently hosted a roundtable with community leaders in Detroit, where he criticized Biden as the “worst president for Black people.” DNC spokesperson Abhi Rahman reiterated that Trump’s record demonstrates his failure to support minority communities, particularly Black Americans. Rahman pointed to the widening racial wealth gap, increasing unemployment rates, and the decline in Black wealth under Trump’s administration.

The DNC emphasized that during the Biden administration, small, Black-owned businesses saw increased support and growth. The ongoing battle for minority voter support continues to fuel political discourse as both parties strive to engage and resonate with these key demographics.
