Elissa Slotkin’s consulting business may have never started.

Democratic Representative Elissa Slotkin’s foray into the world of business has come under scrutiny as she seeks a Senate seat in the battleground state of Michigan. Slotkin established a Limited Liability Company (LLC) named Pinpoint Consulting in 2017, just weeks before announcing her congressional bid to unseat an incumbent Republican.

The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs indicates that the business is currently “Not in Good Standing” as of 2020, with the last annual report being filed in 2019. It appears that Slotkin’s LLC, which she started before her congressional campaign, never generated any income.

Slotkin, who hails from Holly, Michigan, described herself on her campaign website in 2017 as a third-generation Michigander who runs a small consulting business based in her hometown. However, it seems that Pinpoint Consulting has been inactive since its inception and hasn’t generated any revenue.

Despite remaining as the CEO of Pinpoint Consulting in official documents, Slotkin’s firm has not reported any income, clients, or employees. Her financial disclosure report from August 2023 confirmed that the business has been inactive since 2017.

Prior to her congressional bid, Slotkin served as an acting assistant secretary of defense until January 2017. She launched her LLC on June 21, 2017, and by July 10, she had announced her candidacy for Congress against then-Republican Rep. Mike Bishop.

In an interview with Lansing City Pulse in May 2018, Slotkin explained her decision to explore new opportunities after her long government tenure, emphasizing her periodic return to Michigan for self-reflection and planning her next steps.

However, critics like Jason Cabel Roe, who supported Bishop in the 2018 race, believe that Slotkin strategically leveraged her purported small business ownership to appeal to Republican voters in a conservative-leaning district. After her victory, the LLC was seemingly eclipsed, raising questions about the sincerity of her earlier campaign promotion.

Despite its apparent insignificance following her election, Slotkin’s LLC is absent from her current Senate campaign material and official biography. Roe expressed doubts about the authenticity of Slotkin’s business narrative and its potential impact on her Senate bid.

As Slotkin vies for the Democratic Senate nomination in Michigan, she faces competition from actor Hill Harper and businessman Nasser Beydoun, among others. Harper and Beydoun lag behind Slotkin in polls and endorsements, positioning her as the primary race front-runner.

The Michigan Senate primary is scheduled for August 6, with Slotkin aiming to succeed outgoing Senator Debbie Stabenow. The race has been deemed competitive by political analysts, with The Cook Political Report rating it as “Lean Democratic.”

On the Republican side, former Rep. Mike Rogers holds a prominent position with the endorsement of former President Trump. Other contenders include former Reps. Peter Meijer and Justin Amash, as well as businessman Sandy Pensler.

As the election season unfolds, Slotkin’s past involvement with Pinpoint Consulting and the questions surrounding its activities serve as intriguing subplots in the broader narrative of Michigan’s political landscape.
