FBI Director says US at risk of attack like Russian concert hall.
FBI Director Christopher Wray recently conveyed his apprehensions regarding a potential coordinated attack in the United States, akin to the devastating ISIS-K assault at a concert hall in Russia earlier this year. Speaking at a Senate Appropriations subcommittee meeting, Wray emphasized the pressing need for increased funding to combat the rising threat of terrorism.
During the meeting, Wray advocated for a budget request of $11.3 billion for the fiscal year 2025, an increase of $661 million from the previous year. He stressed that the heightened threat environment in the U.S. has escalated in recent times, with the FBI thwarting multiple terrorist plots across different cities nationwide.
Highlighting the alarming trend of foreign terrorist organizations advocating for attacks on U.S. soil, Wray cautioned about the potential for individuals or small groups drawing inspiration from global events to carry out attacks domestically. Moreover, he raised concerns about the possibility of a coordinated assault within the country, similar to the tragic incident at Moscow’s Crocus City concert hall.
On March 22, terrorists attacked the concert hall, resulting in the loss of 137 lives and injuring over 180 people. The perpetrators, identified as Tajik nationals, unleashed a horrific onslaught inside the venue, underlining the devastating impact of such coordinated attacks.
Wray also shed light on the escalating threat faced by the Jewish community in the U.S., which has witnessed a surge in hate crimes post-October 7. The FBI director expressed the urgent need for support to protect vulnerable communities from various terrorist groups, both foreign and domestic.
Emphasizing the critical role of funding in bolstering national security efforts, Wray warned the subcommittee about the adverse consequences of budget cuts on the FBI’s operational capabilities.
