FBI looking into hacking of Biden-Harris and Trump campaigns
Iranian Hackers Suspected of Targeting Trump and Biden Campaigns
Recently, federal investigators have delved into the possibility of Iranian hackers targeting individuals associated with both the Trump and Biden-Harris campaigns. Sources familiar with the investigation revealed that the FBI initiated probes in the early summer following attempted phishing schemes aimed at individuals within the campaigns. It is believed that Iran-backed cybercriminals may be the culprits behind these attacks, as reported by The Washington Post.
This development comes on the heels of the FBI’s confirmation of investigating allegations from the Trump campaign about being targeted by Iranian hackers. While the bureau has not provided further details, the Trump campaign issued a statement alleging that sensitive internal documents were stolen and distributed, with suspicions pointing towards Iranian involvement.
Despite the lack of concrete evidence linking the hack to Iran, Microsoft’s recent report mentioned an instance in June where an Iranian military intelligence unit sent a spear-phishing email to a high-ranking official of a presidential campaign from a compromised email account. Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung attributed the hack to “foreign sources hostile to the United States.”
On the other hand, a Biden-Harris campaign official reassured that they diligently monitor and protect against cyber threats, expressing no awareness of security breaches within their systems.
As the investigation unfolds, concerns regarding foreign interference in the U.S. election process remain at the forefront. The implications of potential cyberattacks on presidential campaigns underscore the growing challenges associated with securing sensitive political data and protecting against malicious intrusions.
