Five more House Democrats and a third US senator urge Biden to withdraw

Dear readers of Boston Post News,

Five more House Democrats have recently joined the increasing number of congressional lawmakers calling on President Biden to withdraw from the 2024 election. In a joint statement, Reps. Jared Huffman, Marc Veasey, Chuy Garcia, and Marc Pocan have urged Biden to pass the torch to a new generation of Democratic leaders.

The lawmakers expressed their admiration for Biden’s personal character, respect for his years of public service, and appreciation for what has been achieved during his presidency. However, they emphasized the need to defeat Donald Trump, protect democracy, maintain international alliances, and build on the existing foundation.

They acknowledged the concerns surrounding Biden’s age and fitness that have arisen in the public sphere, highlighting the potential impact on his campaign. Despite recognizing these perceptions as unfair, they believe that stepping aside as the nominee while continuing to lead the party is the most responsible and patriotic decision at this time.

Rep. Veasey, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, is the first from the group to call for Biden to step aside. Additionally, Rep. Sean Casten penned an op-ed urging Biden to pass the torch, while Sen. Martin Heinrich called on Biden to suspend his presidential campaign.

With a total of 28 congressional Democrats now urging Biden to step aside, behind-the-scenes discussions among party officials, donors, and Biden allies are reportedly intensifying. Should Biden choose to withdraw from the race, Vice President Kamala Harris is seen as a potential replacement, although concerns exist within the party regarding her electability against Trump.

Despite the mounting pressure, Biden has not shown any intention to step aside, with his campaign vehemently refuting such suggestions. Campaign Chair Jen O’Malley Dillon emphasized Biden’s commitment to the race and acknowledged the challenges faced in recent weeks.

As the calls for Biden to drop out continue to grow, the Democratic Party is facing a crucial juncture in the lead-up to the 2024 election. Stay tuned for further developments as the political landscape evolves.
