Garvey says Schiff’s decision to stop supporting Biden is selfish and desperate due to fundraising problems during campaign.
California Senate candidate Steve Garvey has recently criticized Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., for his sudden shift in stance regarding President Biden’s re-election bid. Garvey labeled Schiff’s actions as “selfish desperation” after realizing that his Senate campaign had been outraised by over $1 million.
In a social media post, Garvey expressed his lack of surprise at Schiff’s call for Biden to step aside so soon after it was revealed that Garvey’s campaign had raised $1.2 million more than Schiff’s. This fundraising success marked the first time in 14 years that a Republican statewide candidate in California had superseded a Democratic candidate in fundraising.
Between April 1 and June 30, Garvey managed to raise an impressive $5.4 million compared to Schiff’s $4.1 million. Garvey also raised questions about Schiff’s motives, wondering why Schiff was quick to call for Biden to withdraw from the presidential race but did not call for his resignation altogether.
“The question must be asked: If Schiff doubts Biden’s effectiveness as a candidate, why does he believe Biden can continue to be an effective president? It’s evident from Schiff’s actions that he is deeply concerned about his and other Democratic candidates’ chances in the upcoming November elections,” Garvey commented.
In response to Schiff’s plea for Biden to abandon his re-election bid, Schiff acknowledged Biden’s accomplishments but emphasized that the nation stands at a critical juncture. He remarked that while it is ultimately Biden’s decision whether to withdraw from the race, he believes it is time for Biden to pass the torch to a new leader who could secure victory against Donald Trump in the next election.
Schiff assured that regardless of who the Democratic party nominates or if the nomination remains with Biden, he is committed to supporting the chosen candidate to ensure the defeat of Trump, stating, “There is only one singular goal: defeating Donald Trump. The stakes are just too high.”
In March, Schiff clashed with special counsel Robert Hur during a House hearing following Hur’s report that did not bring any criminal charges against President Biden. Schiff accused Hur of writing a report that was prejudicial to the president and would have a significant political impact.
Garvey, a former professional baseball player, is gearing up to challenge Schiff in the upcoming California election. Despite the race being categorized as “Solid Democratic,” according to the Cook Political Report, Garvey remains determined to contest against Schiff and bring a fresh perspective to the political landscape.
Schiff’s call for Biden to exit the race makes him the 20th congressional Democrat to advocate for Biden’s withdrawal. In total, 35 Democrats from both the House and Senate have urged Biden to drop out of the 2024 election. The upcoming election promises to be a closely watched and pivotal event in California politics.
