George Clooney says Biden should withdraw from the race.
Actor George Clooney recently made headlines with a bold opinion piece calling for President Joe Biden to step down from his reelection campaign due to his advancing age. Clooney, a staunch Democratic fundraiser, emphasized his deep respect and admiration for Biden but expressed concerns about his recent performance and the impact it could have on the upcoming election.
In his piece for The New York Times, titled “I Love Joe Biden. But We Need A New Nominee,” Clooney highlighted the need for new leadership within the Democratic Party. He praised Biden for his long career in public service, but noted that he has shown signs of slowing down and struggling to keep up with the demands of the campaign trail.
“I love Joe Biden,” Clooney wrote. “As a senator. As a vice president and as president. I consider him a friend, and I believe in him. Believe in his character. Believe in his morals.”
However, Clooney pointed out that Biden’s recent performance at the debate with former President Donald Trump was lackluster and raised concerns among Democrats about his ability to lead the party to victory in November. He noted that party leaders must listen to the concerns of voters and consider the possibility of supporting a new candidate.
“We are not going to win in November with this president. On top of that, we won’t win the House, and we’re going to lose the Senate,” Clooney said. “This isn’t only my opinion; this is the opinion of every senator and congress member and governor that I’ve spoken with in private. Every single one, irrespective of what he or she is saying publicly.”
Clooney argued that it would be “disingenuous” to ignore the signs of Biden’s decline and urged Democratic leaders to consider alternative candidates who could energize the party and attract new voters. He suggested that figures like Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and California Gov. Gavin Newsom could step up to the challenge and participate in debates that focus on policy rather than personal attacks.
“Would it be messy? Yes. Democracy is messy. But would it enliven our party and wake up voters who, long before the June debate, had already checked out? It sure would,” Clooney said.
The actor’s bold stance has sparked a heated debate within the Democratic Party, with some applauding his courage and others criticizing him for undermining Biden’s campaign. As the party leadership grapples with the decision of whether to continue supporting Biden or explore other options, the future of the Democratic Party hangs in the balance.
Whether President Biden will heed Clooney’s call to step down remains to be seen. But one thing is certain – the actor’s words have ignited a conversation about the need for new leadership and fresh ideas within the Democratic Party.
