Georgia’s Supreme Court recently made a significant decision rejecting a Republican-led effort to implement seven controversial new election rules before Election Day. The court’s brief order issued on Tuesday stated that it would not reinstate the rules put forth by the State Election Board, effectively putting an end to the attempt to enforce the new regulations in time for the upcoming election. These rules, including the requirement for hand-counting of ballots and others related to result certification, were deemed “illegal, unconstitutional, and void” by a lower-level Georgia judge on October 16. Notably, three of the State Election Board’s five members, all endorsed by former President Donald Trump, were in favor of these rules.

It is important to note that President Biden emerged victorious in Georgia in 2020, prompting Trump to make unsubstantiated claims of election fraud. The introduction of these new rules faced opposition not only from Democrats but also from state Republican officials who raised concerns about their legality. Despite the rejection of the appeal by the Georgia Supreme Court, the door is not completely closed on the matter. In their order, the court mentioned that proceedings would continue in the usual manner once the appeal is docketed.
