GOP Leader Speaker Johnson calls on Biden to resign from presidency.

Republican lawmakers are urging President Biden to resign from office immediately following his announcement that he will not seek re-election in November. Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., stated that if Biden is not fit to run for President, then he is not fit to serve as President and must resign immediately. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., also called for Biden’s resignation, emphasizing that if the Democrat party has deemed him unfit for re-election, then he is unfit to control the nuclear codes.

House GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., echoed these sentiments, stating that if Biden is unable to run for re-election, he is incapable of serving as President and must step down immediately. Republican Study Committee Chair Kevin Hern, R-Okla., emphasized that if Biden is unfit to be the Democratic nominee for president, then he is unfit to continue serving as president for the remainder of his term.

President Biden, aged 81, has faced mounting pressure to drop out of the 2024 presidential race following a poorly received debate performance against former President Trump. Concerns were raised regarding his mental and physical fitness to run a campaign and serve another four-year term. Finally succumbing to the pressure, Biden released a public letter on Sunday announcing his decision to withdraw from the race and focus solely on fulfilling his duties as President for the remainder of his term.

Democratic lawmakers who have supported Biden acknowledged that he can fulfill the remaining five months of his term, despite the decision to forego re-election. Some have argued that doubts about his candidacy are distracting from the campaign, while others have expressed concerns about his capability four years down the road.

Republicans who have long criticized Biden’s mental fitness for office have seized on his announcement as validation of their concerns. Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., chair of the Senate GOP’s campaign arm, formally called on President Biden to resign from office, citing doubts about his ability to effectively execute his duties as Commander-in-Chief

Other Republican representatives, such as Rep. Wesley Hunt, R-Texas, and Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., have also expressed their doubts about Biden’s ability to continue serving as President given his decision not to seek re-election. The calls for his resignation have been amplified across the Republican party following Biden’s announcement.
