Governor of swing state unsure of who will win election after debate.

New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu has been a vocal critic of former President Trump for the past few years, but he believes that the state is still a competitive playing field for the former president as he gears up to become the GOP’s 2024 presidential nominee. With the last time a Republican winning New Hampshire in a presidential election being almost 25 years ago, hope is rising among Republicans as recent polls have shown a close race in the state and dissatisfaction with President Biden’s debate performance.

Sununu expressed optimism about Trump’s prospects in a swing state like New Hampshire and pointed out concerns among Democrats about Biden’s ability to lead the country for another four years due to physical and cognitive issues. He also highlighted the significant impact of inflation on average families, suggesting that voters are desperate for change.

Despite Sununu’s positive outlook, Democrats in New Hampshire remain unconvinced. Former Democratic state party chair Kathy Sullivan emphasized that New Hampshire is not favorable terrain for Trump and that the dynamics between Biden and Trump are unlikely to shift significantly.

Currently, Democrats hold a substantial organizational advantage over Republicans in terms of ground operations in New Hampshire, with a robust grassroots campaign infrastructure and multiple field offices across the state. However, Sununu and other Republicans are hopeful that Trump’s campaign will make significant strides in the state.

Although Sununu won’t be present at the upcoming Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, he expressed willingness to engage with the media remotely. He also suggested that the choice of Trump’s running mate will play a crucial role in the former president’s future efficiency if he returns to office.

When asked about North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum as a potential running mate, Sununu spoke highly of his former colleague and friend, underscoring Burgum’s suitability for a position in the Trump administration. Sununu himself has ruled out running for the U.S. Senate in 2026 but remains open to future political possibilities as he prepares to conclude his term as governor.

Despite considering a run for the GOP presidential nomination last year, Sununu ultimately decided against it. However, he remains open to new opportunities and chapters in his life, indicating that his political journey may take unexpected turns in the future.
