Harris defends herself against GOP criticism for not having children.

Vice President Kamala Harris recently addressed comments made by Senator JD Vance regarding “childless cat ladies” as well as criticisms from Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders about her lack of biological children, stating that these remarks reveal a lack of understanding about women’s diverse experiences. The conversation took place on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast hosted by Alexandra Cooper. Vance’s comments insinuated that women without biological children are unhappy and aim to make others miserable. Harris, a stepmother of two, described Vance’s remarks as “mean-spirited,” emphasizing the importance of leaders who uplift rather than tear down others.

Similarly, Sanders, a former press secretary for President Donald Trump, had also questioned Harris’ humility due to her lack of biological children. Harris responded by highlighting the different ways in which women find fulfillment and connection, emphasizing the importance of supporting each other. She shared her personal experience of being a stepmother and how she navigated forming relationships with her husband’s children. Harris also emphasized the evolution of the modern family structure, recognizing that families come in various forms beyond traditional norms.

Despite some criticism from Republicans, including Nikki Haley, over Vance’s comments, the larger conversation speaks to broader gender dynamics in politics. Women have traditionally leaned towards Democratic candidates, while men have favored Republican candidates. These patterns seem to be holding true in the current election cycle, as indicated by polling data showing higher support for Harris among women compared to men.

The interview with “Call Her Daddy” is just one of several media appearances Harris has made recently. She also sat down with 60 Minutes’ Bill Whittaker for an election special, which was originally intended to feature both presidential candidates but ended up only including Harris. Additionally, Harris is scheduled to appear on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and “The View” as part of her campaign outreach efforts.
