Harris is now the favorite in betting markets for the first time.

Vice President Kamala Harris has surged ahead in the betting odds, taking the lead for the first time since her elevation to the top of the ticket. According to the Real Clear Politics betting average on Thursday, Harris holds a 50.7% chance of being elected president, while former President Trump trails at a 47.9% chance of winning the election.

This marks the first time that Harris has been the favorite to win the election, as well as the first time that the Democratic ticket has been favored over Trump since May 1 when President Biden was still in the race. Back then, Biden held a narrow 42.3% to 42.2% advantage in the Real Clear Politics betting average.

Following Biden’s decision to drop out of the race and endorse Harris, Trump’s lead began to decline, reaching a peak of 66.2% on July 15. However, the odds started to shift in Harris’ favor after she secured the Democratic nomination and named Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate. The Harris campaign believes that this strategic move will help her solidify support in critical Midwestern swing states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

Harris is currently leading or tied with Trump in all major betting markets tracked by Real Clear Politics, with her biggest lead on the platform Predictit. Shares of Harris were selling for 57 cents, compared to Trump’s 46 cents – representing an 11-cent lead for the vice president on this prediction market.

Additionally, Harris has overtaken Trump in many national polls, becoming the leader on the Real Clear Politics polling average for the first time on Monday. This shift marks the first time that the presumed Democratic ticket has had the advantage since September 11 of last year when Biden held a 44.5% to 44.3% lead.

The momentum seems to be in Vice President Harris’ favor as the election approaches. With the betting odds and national polls aligning in her favor, Harris is positioned as a strong contender for the presidency. As the race heats up, all eyes will be on Harris and Trump as they battle it out for the White House.
