House Democrat avoids answering question about Vice President Harris’ work on border issues, claims not to know who she is
In a recent encounter at the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, D.C., Democrat Rep. Emilia Sykes, who is running for re-election in an Ohio district vulnerable for Democrats, chose to ignore questions about Vice President Kamala Harris’ record on immigration.
When asked if she believed Harris did a good job as the border czar, Sykes simply continued walking without responding, leading to a follow-up question on her opinion regarding Harris’ performance.
Despite the persistence of the questioner, Sykes replied by remarking on the pronunciation of Harris’ name, even claiming not to know who Kamala Harris was until corrected that she is the vice president before entering her office. This response drew criticism from those who believe she should have shown more respect and acknowledged Harris’ position and overall work.
It is worth noting that Emilia Sykes had previously endorsed Harris for president, committing to support and collaborate with fellow Democrats to back Harris as the nominee in the last election. Sykes, a first-term Democrat, secured her victory in 2022 by a narrow margin and now faces the challenging task of defending her seat in a district that includes areas where President Trump had a strong foothold in the 2020 election.
The Cook Political Report categorizes the upcoming race as a “Democrat Toss-Up,” indicating the competitiveness and uncertainty of the region’s political landscape. With all these factors in play, the spotlight is on Emilia Sykes as she navigates through tough questions and tough competition on her journey towards re-election.
