House GOP committee investigates Liz Cheney’s communication with former Trump aide on January 6th.

House GOP Investigators Digging Deeper into Liz Cheney’s Communications

House GOP investigators are intensifying their scrutiny of former Rep. Liz Cheney’s communications with ex-Trump administration staffers as they continue to delve into the operations of the now-defunct House select committee on Jan. 6.

Rep. Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga., who chairs the House Committee on Administration’s oversight subcommittee, recently sent a letter to Alyssa Farah Griffin seeking records of her communications with Cheney, as well as with Cassidy Hutchinson, Trump White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, Secret Service agents assigned to Meadows or former President Trump, and officials in the Fulton County, Georgia, district attorney’s office.

Loudermilk specifically focused on Griffin’s interactions with Hutchinson, alleging that Griffin had convinced Hutchinson to alter her testimony in front of the select committee. He also referenced portions of Hutchinson’s memoir that seemed to suggest Griffin initially acted as a link between Hutchinson and Cheney.

According to Loudermilk’s letter, Griffin’s conversation with Hutchinson in the summer of 2021 raised doubts about the accuracy of Hutchinson’s statements to the select committee. Hutchinson’s subsequent testimony contained purportedly dramatic changes attributed to her discussions with Griffin.

Hutchinson, a former Trump administration aide, was a key witness for the Jan. 6 committee, established by then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Hutchinson alleged that former President Trump physically lunged at his driver, Robert Engel, when the agent refused to drive him to the U.S. Capitol. Trump and other individuals linked to the incident disputed Hutchinson’s claims.

Griffin, who previously served as White House director of strategic communication under Trump, revealed on CNN in September 2023 that she had acted as an intermediary between Hutchinson and the Jan. 6 committee before Hutchinson’s pivotal third interview and consequential testimony.

Noteworthy information provided by Hutchinson during this period, such as allegations that Meadows destroyed White House documents, caught Griffin’s attention and prompted her to share it with Cheney.

This communication ultimately led to Cheney posing probing questions to Hutchinson, exposing details that differed significantly from her earlier discussions with the committee. These revelations included accusations that Trump endorsed the rioters who called for Pence’s hanging.

House GOP investigators referenced Hutchinson’s memoir, which detailed her meeting with Griffin, as a basis for their inquiry.

Loudermilk’s letter to Griffin underscored the lack of corroborating evidence for the explosive claims made by Hutchinson, apart from her conversation with Griffin, before her testimony to the select committee.

The committee has also requested Griffin to participate in a voluntary transcribed interview later this month, in addition to providing her communication records.

House GOP’s intensified probe into the communications between Liz Cheney, Cassidy Hutchinson, and Alyssa Farah Griffin is shaping up to be a critical development in understanding the events surrounding the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
