House GOP proposes ‘Let Trump Speak Act’ to prevent gag orders in court.

Rep. Andy Ogles is making a bold move by introducing the “Let Trump Speak Act,” which aims to prevent judges from imposing gag orders on defendants like former President Trump in any legal proceedings. This initiative by Ogles, a staunch Trump ally, is a response to what he sees as attempts by activists within the justice system to silence President Trump for their own political gain.

If this bill passes, it would enable individuals to file civil lawsuits in U.S. district courts to seek injunctive relief if they believe their right to free speech is being violated. Ten Republicans in the House are supporting this bill, seeing it as a necessary step to stop what they perceive as the unfair targeting and harassment of President Trump.

One of the bill’s co-sponsors, Rep. Bob Good, emphasized the need to put an end to the weaponization of justice and the persecution of President Trump. Similarly, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna highlighted how institutions have been used in attempts to stifle President Trump’s voice and stressed the importance of protecting fundamental American values from being distorted by political motivations.

Joining Good and Luna as co-sponsors are Reps. Jeff Duncan, Matt Rosendale, Byron Donalds, Mary Miller, Diana Harshbarger, Eric Burlison, and Eli Crane. This bipartisan effort is a response to the ongoing legal battles faced by President Trump, particularly in the New York Supreme Court where attempts to lift the gag order imposed on him have been met with resistance.

In a recent ruling, the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court upheld the gag order, citing the need to balance the defendant’s First Amendment rights with the court’s duty to ensure a fair trial and protect parties related to the legal proceedings from undue influence or harm. The case at the center of this controversy revolves around payments made by Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, to Stormy Daniels in an effort to silence her claims of an affair with Trump before the 2016 election.

Despite the legal setbacks faced by Trump, Rep. Ogles remains steadfast in his support for the “Let Trump Speak Act,” condemning what he perceives as attempts to silence a prominent political figure through abusive legal tactics reminiscent of authoritarian regimes. This bill has garnered significant attention and support from individuals across party lines who view it as a necessary safeguard against the misuse of the justice system for political ends.
