House Republicans want Secret Service director to be fired immediately.
House Republicans Demand Firing of Secret Service Director Over Trump Assassination Attempt
In a bold move, House Republicans have introduced a resolution calling for the dismissal of U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle in the wake of the failed assassination attempt on former President Trump. This resolution, unveiled by Rep. Nick Langworthy, R-N.Y., has garnered support from several members of the House Oversight Committee, who are frustrated with Cheatle’s perceived lack of transparency and competence.
The incident in question occurred during a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a 20-year-old gunman managed to open fire on the former president from a rooftop just outside the event perimeter. While Trump sustained a gunshot wound to the ear and was safely evacuated by Secret Service agents, one attendee tragically lost their life, and two others were injured.
Langworthy was blunt in his criticism of Cheatle, stating, “In our Oversight hearing today, she did nothing but dodge questions and deflect blame. Corey Comperatore is dead because of this failure of the Secret Service. The American people deserve transparency and competence from their leaders, especially those tasked with the critical responsibility of protecting our nation’s highest office. She must be fired now.”
Amidst mounting pressure for her removal, even a top Democrat, Rep. Brendan Boyle, D-Pa., has called for Cheatle to resign. The sentiment of distrust towards the Secret Service director was bipartisan, with Democrats also expressing dissatisfaction with her responses during the hearing.
Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., criticized Cheatle for evading direct questions, stating, “If she continues to evade fairly simple and direct questions…I think she makes the case for her continuation much more problematic.” Progressive Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., went a step further, demanding Cheatle’s resignation, asserting that any assassination attempt on a president warrants swift accountability.
As the controversy surrounding Cheatle continues to grow, the need for transparency, accountability, and effective leadership within the Secret Service has never been more apparent. The resolution introduced by House Republicans signals a critical turning point in the ongoing discussions regarding the future of the agency and the individuals responsible for safeguarding our nation’s leaders.
