Hunter Biden’s law license suspended by DC Bar due to felony conviction
Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, faces the imminent loss of his law license in Washington, D.C. This development comes after a disciplinary counsel moved to suspend him following his felony convictions. The Office of Disciplinary Counsel, responsible for overseeing penalties for members of the bar in D.C., issued a letter to the D.C. Court of Appeals requesting the immediate suspension of Hunter Biden’s law license in the district until the matter is resolved.
Any felony conviction is classified as a “serious crime” by the D.C. bar, triggering a policy that mandates the immediate suspension of the law license of anyone convicted of such an offense, regardless of the status of an appeal. However, the court does have the authority to waive the suspension “when it appears in the interest of justice to do so,” as reported by NBC News.
In a recent trial in Delaware, Hunter Biden was found guilty of three felony gun-related charges. These charges include making a false statement in the purchase of a gun, making a false statement regarding information required by a federally licensed gun dealer, and possession of a gun by a person who is an unlawful user of or addicted to a controlled substance.
Prosecutors presented evidence to establish that Hunter Biden had provided false information on a federal firearm form, ATF Form 4473, back in October 2018. During the purchase of a gun from a store in Wilmington, Biden checked a box indicating “No” when asked if he was an unlawful user of substances or addicted to controlled substances.
Hunter Biden’s struggles with substance abuse have been well-documented, particularly detailed in his 2021 memoir, “Beautiful Things.” The memoir delves into his past dependency on crack cocaine, revealing instances where he had to smoke crack every 20 minutes and referred to himself as a “crack daddy” to drug dealers. It narrates encounters with drug dealers, including one in Washington, D.C., whom Biden had nicknamed “Bicycles.”
In response to his recent conviction, Hunter Biden’s legal team filed a motion for a new trial, only to withdraw it shortly afterward. The motion, submitted by Biden’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, argued that the court lacked jurisdiction to proceed with the trial as two appeals in the case are still pending.
According to the filing, Lowell stated, “The Third Circuit [appeals court], however, did not then and has not yet issued its mandate as to the orders dismissing either appeal. Thus, when this Court empaneled the jury on June 3, 2024, and proceeded to trial, it was without jurisdiction to do so.” Despite this argument, the motion was swiftly retracted from a court document website, as reported by Reuters.
