Hunter Biden’s lawyers ask for a new trial for his gun case.

Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, is facing legal trouble after being found guilty on all charges related to his purchase of a firearm in 2018. His defense attorney, Abbe Lowell, has resubmitted a motion requesting a new trial, arguing that the federal court in Delaware lacked jurisdiction to proceed with the trial. This motion follows a previous filing that was quickly withdrawn without explanation.

The charges against Biden stem from his alleged false statements about his drug use when purchasing the firearm. He was specifically found guilty of making false statements in the gun purchase, providing false information to a federally licensed gun dealer, and possessing a gun as an unlawful user of a controlled substance. Despite pleading not guilty, Biden was convicted on June 11, marking a historic moment as the first time a sitting president’s child has faced trial in U.S. history.

Throughout the trial, prosecutors highlighted Biden’s documented history of substance abuse, including details from his memoir “Beautiful Things” where he candidly discusses his struggles with drug addiction. Despite this history, the defense argued that Biden did not consider himself an active drug addict at the time of the gun purchase, pointing to his recent stay in rehab before the incident.

Prosecutors countered by presenting evidence, including text messages, to demonstrate that Biden was still battling addiction around the time he bought the firearm. One message showed Biden mentioning waiting for a drug dealer just days after purchasing the gun, reinforcing the prosecution’s argument that he was an active addict at that time.

After a seven-day trial, the jury took just three hours to reach a guilty verdict on all charges. While the maximum potential prison time for the offenses is 25 years, Biden’s status as a first-time offender may result in a lesser sentence. Sentencing is expected to take place later this year, pending a date to be set by the court.

Meanwhile, a separate issue has arisen regarding Biden’s law license in Washington, D.C. The Disciplinary Counsel for the district has filed a notice seeking to suspend his license following the guilty verdict. Despite this development, as of now, Biden’s law license is still active and in good standing according to the D.C. Bar’s website.

As the legal battle continues for Hunter Biden, the outcome of his request for a new trial remains uncertain. The case has garnered significant attention not only for its direct impact on him but also for its broader implications given his family ties to the sitting president. The coming months will likely bring further developments in this high-profile and controversial saga.
