Hunter Biden’s tax trial delayed until September

The federal judge overseeing Hunter Biden’s criminal tax trial in California has granted a request from his attorneys to push back the trial from June to September. This decision came after a pre-trial hearing where arguments were heard, and the trial date was moved to accommodate Hunter Biden’s legal team.

Hunter Biden, the son of President Biden, had pleaded not guilty to federal tax charges in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. These charges included three felonies and six misdemeanors related to $1.4 million in owed taxes that have since been paid.

The Special Counsel, David Weiss, alleged that there was a “four-year scheme” where Hunter Biden failed to pay his federal income taxes from January 2017 to October 2020, and also submitted false tax reports during that time.

The trial was originally scheduled to begin on June 20, but Judge Scarsi decided to postpone the trial, with jury selection now set to start on September 5. Federal prosecutors had opposed the delay, arguing that Hunter Biden had initially agreed to the June 20 trial date last year and that there were insufficient reasons for the postponement.

In addition to the tax charges in California, Hunter Biden is also facing federal gun charges in Delaware, with his trial scheduled to start on June 3. In this case, Weiss has charged Hunter Biden with making a false statement during the purchase of a firearm, providing false information to a licensed firearm dealer, and possessing a firearm while being an unlawful drug user.

Despite the charges in Delaware, Hunter Biden has pleaded not guilty to all the allegations brought against him. With legal proceedings in multiple states, the first son of President Biden continues to navigate a complex legal landscape as he faces these criminal charges.
