Hunter Biden’s trial continues with his defense team deciding if he should testify.

First son Hunter Biden is potentially set to testify in his criminal trial on Monday, as per his defense team’s announcement. Day five of Biden’s trial in Wilmington, Delaware, focuses on the purchase of a handgun in 2018, with the possibility of Biden himself taking the stand. Defense attorney Abbe Lowell mentioned after Friday’s lunch break that a decision on whether to call Biden to testify will be made over the weekend, with Special Counsel David Weiss’ office being notified of the final choice.

Judge Maryellen Noreika requested both legal parties report back to the J. Caleb Boggs Federal Building and United States Courthouse some time after 8:15 a.m. on Monday for the public disclosure of the decision.

The prosecutors aim to establish that Biden provided false information on a federal firearm form, ATF Form 4473, in October 2018 when he indicated “No” to being an unlawful user of a firearm or addicted to controlled substances. The handgun in question, a Cobra Colt .38, was purchased from StarQuest Shooters & Survival Supply in Wilmington.

Biden is up against charges of falsely stating information in connection to the gun purchase, making a false statement related to data mandated to be retained by a federally licensed gun dealer, and possessing a gun while being an unlawful user of or addicted to a controlled substance.

Declaring his innocence, Biden pleaded not guilty to the charges. His defense team, acknowledging his documented struggles with addiction as detailed in his memoir ‘Beautiful Things,’ argues that at the time of the gun purchase, he did not consider himself a user of illicit substances.

Day four of the trial featured a lineup of witnesses, including Dr. Jason Brewer, a forensic chemist from the FBI, DEA Supervisory Special Agent Joshua Romig, gun shop employee Jason Turner who conducted the background check, StarQuest Shooters & Survival Supply owner Ronald Palimere, and Biden’s daughter, Naomi Biden.

Naomi Biden testified on Friday afternoon, acknowledging her father’s addiction issues but stating she had never personally seen him use drugs such as crack cocaine.

She recounted a trip to California in August 2018 to meet her father during his stay at a rehab facility, dining with him, his sober coach, and her then-boyfriend and now-husband Peter Neal at a coffee shop. Naomi expressed pride in her father’s commitment to sobriety.

During the cross-examination, prosecutor Leo Wise questioned Naomi Biden about events in mid-October 2018, focusing on a pickup truck she had in New York City at the time. Testimony revealed that the revolver was stored in the truck before being disposed of by Hallie Biden, Hunter’s sister-in-law-turned-girlfriend, at a grocery store trashcan in Wilmington.

Chemistry expert Brewer testified that the substance found on the gun’s pouch, tested as cocaine, indicated a potential link to crack cocaine usage. Prosecutors presented Naomi Biden with text messages exchanged with her father in October 2018, shedding light on discussions surrounding the truck and potential late-night exchanges involving the vehicle.

Allegations surfaced during the trial regarding Biden’s involvement in drug-related activities shortly after purchasing the gun in October 2018. Hunter Biden closely observed Naomi’s testimony, reflecting on the shared messages from that period.

Aside from expert witnesses and Naomi Biden’s testimony, the court also heard statements from the gun shop owner and employee present during Biden’s purchase. Tense exchanges occurred between defense attorney Lowell and employee Turner, highlighting the logistics of the firearm acquisition process.

The possibility of Biden testifying in court adds anticipation to the trial’s trajectory, potentially extending the proceedings if a rebuttal witness is called. Conversely, without Biden’s testimony, the trial could progress to closing statements, jury instructions, and deliberations as early as Monday.

During Friday’s session, first lady Jill Biden returned to court alongside Hunter Biden’s wife, Melissa Cohen, and President Biden’s sister, Valerie Biden. Her presence underscored the familial support surrounding Hunter Biden amid this high-profile legal battle.
